HIKING: Moraine View State Recreation Area

← IL WEST OKAW RIVER LOVINGTON IL Triple Blaze →

Description

This 1,687-acre park is accented by ridges left by glacial movement that are now dotted with scattered groves of hardwood trees. A beautiful 158-acre lake serves as a convenient area for relaxing and enjoying water sports. It offers year-round recreational opportunities from its location east of Bloomington-Normal and near Le Roy: Kickapoo and Potawatomi tribes lived here when settlers first came to the area. This facility has a concession stand with both indoor and patio seating, and also serves as a check station for permit pheasant hunters in the fall. The park is complete with facilities for picnicking, camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding and hunting.

A variety of hiking opportunities are offered at the Moraine View State Park including the half-mile Tanglewood Nature Trail which winds around the lake in the forest and with guide you to an area where you can view a beaver dam and lodge. The Tall Timber Trail is 1.5-miles of hiking over moderate terrain, complete with primitive camp sites. The Timber Point Trail is handicap accessible and it is a .5-mile trail through the woods. The park also offers 10 miles of equestrian trails that can also be used for hiking.
